The Case of the North Korean Deepfake Part 1

Can you believe your eyes and ears?

What would you do if you could no longer believe your eyes or your ears during an online interview with a job candidate?

That’s where we are right now as AI industrializes deception through realtime deepfakes. And authoritarian regimes such as North Korea are continually iterating on the latest innovations to infiltrate western tech companies, by swapping faces and synthesizing voices.

Can you spot the deepfake in this excerpted candidate interview by Pindrop marketing intelligence guru Katelyn Halbert?

I was there filming her conversation in person recently, and struggled to get past the uncanny feeling that something was slightly “off.” Happily Katelyn leveraged both her expertise and available tools to immediately launch an investigation into the faked persona on her screen.

This is part 1 of a series of 3 vignettes extracted from my ongoing documentary production of “The Only Human in the Room.” I’ll drop part 2 in a few days, as DTEX’ Michael Barnhart confirms the “candidate’s” true intentions.

As for this video…

…Look closely at the face

…Listen to his voice

…Consider his answers

And stay tuned for what happens next.
